Dhaka, September 4, 2022 (BSS): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that her government wants to continue the inexorable pace of development in the country. That is why along with job creation, uninterrupted power is being provided to establish an integrated communication system.
He said, ‘We know that development of communication system, power supply and employment generation are essential for the progress of a country. Since coming to power in 1996, we have been working with these issues in mind.’
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this while inaugurating the much-discussed 1,493 meter ‘Bangmata Begum Fazilatun Necha Mujib 8th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge’ on Kacha River at Bekutia in Pirojpur this morning.
He joined the program virtually from the Chameli Hall of his office and said that since the Awami League government came to power in 1996, it has been working to ensure the economic progress of the country and change the fate of the people, especially the Trinamool people.
Briefly describing his government’s initiatives to ensure socio-economic development of the country, he said, “We want the pace of development of the country to continue.”
The Prime Minister said that the people of the southern region were deprived for a long time. Because at the risk of their lives, many poor people had to cross big rivers to come to the capital for livelihood and treatment.
He said, I constructed the Shikarpur-Doarika bridge to connect Dhaka with Barisal in 1996 and the construction of the bridge over Kirttankhola is not in hand.
Sheikh Hasina said, Gabkhan bridge is also done by her government. Besides, his government has built one bridge after another for the development of communication system with North Bengal.
The Prime Minister said that due to the inauguration of the Bangmata Begum Fazilatun Nesha Mujib Eighth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge on Kacha River at Bekutia in Pirojpur, direct communication between Dhaka and Pirojpur has been established.
He said people will get fresh guavas and amra from Pirojpur in the capital. Shital Pati of this region is also famous. Residents of the district can set up food processing industry among others which will contribute greatly in changing the socio-economic condition of the district and region.
The construction of the bridge started on November 1, 2018. The Roads and Highways Department constructed the ‘Bangmata Begum Fazilatun Necha Mujib 8th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge’ at a cost of Tk 894.08 crore.
The Chinese government has spent Tk 654.80 crore and the Bangladesh government has spent Tk 239.80 crore as project support for the bridge.
The bridge will facilitate direct road connectivity between Kuakata Beach, Payra Deep Sea Port, Mongla Sea Port and Benapole, the country’s largest land port.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Ziming spoke on the occasion. Road Transport and Highways Department Secretary ABM Amin Ullah Noori made a power point presentation on the occasion. A video on the project was also screened at the event. On this occasion, two gatherings were organized in Bangmata Setu area on the west and east sides. Fisheries and Livestock Minister Sh. Rezaul Karim, Member of Parliament for Pirojpur-1 Constituency in Paschimpar and Anwar Hossain Manju, Member of Parliament for Pirojpur-2 Constituency in Purpurpar, were present. The Prime Minister later interacted with the people of the project area.
The Prime Minister said that they will develop Payra Port as part of the government’s steps to strengthen the country’s economy.
He said that his government is prioritizing the development of modern transport system by implementing various projects to increase economic progress.
He said ‘We are developing modern transport system to accelerate the economic progress of the country’.
The Prime Minister said that his government has increased the total length of highways across the country to 22,000 km by upgrading 718 km of highways to 4-lane or above, while work is underway to convert 600 km of highways to 4-lane or above.
He said that the government is implementing various projects including metro rail and elevated expressway project in Dhaka, 20 km rapid bus transit from Gazipur to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, construction of Bangabandhu Tunnel under Karnaphuli River in Chittagong and 10-lane Tongi Bridge. Once these projects are completed, our economy will get more momentum.
