The police recovered the hanging body of a student named Shahnaz Akhter from Azizul Haque student hostel in Kamer Mor area of Rangpur city. He is a fourth year student of Begum Rokeya University Department of Accounting and Information Systems. His house is in South Ghagoa of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila.
According to police and family sources, Shahnaz had a love affair with a boy from the village.
On hearing the news of his marriage, he committed suicide.
Officer-in-Charge (SI) of Begum Rokeya University Police Outpost Izar Ali said, ‘We went to the spot on Saturday (September 3) at around 11 pm. I saw the hanging body of the girl wrapped in a veil with a fan in a room. Later, the hanging body of Shahnaz was recovered by breaking open the door in the presence of the President of Mess Malik Samiti, the Proctoral Body of the University. ‘
The students staying in the dormitory said that the windows and doors of Shahnaz’s room were closed since 3 o’clock on Saturday. Shahnaz did not open the door even though it was late in the afternoon, her girlfriends knocked on the door from 8:30 pm. But without getting any response, he saw Shahnaz hanging from the fan by twisting the veil from the back window. They believe that he committed suicide between 3 pm and 5 pm.
Meanwhile, the proctorial body of the university handed over the body to his family around 2.30 pm that day without an autopsy. When the matter is known, curiosity arises among the students, why was it not investigated?
In this regard, University Proctor Golam Rabbani said that the student’s family did not want an investigation. They asked for the girl’s body. Later, the body was handed over after negotiating with the police administration.
Izar Ali, Officer-in-Charge (SI) of the University Police Outpost, said that Shahnaz Akhtar’s body was handed over without post-mortem due to the request of the family as no evidence was found in the incident.
