Barisal: With the inauguration of the Bangmata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Bridge built over the Kacha River in Pirojpur, the ferry era of Barisal via Pirojpur to Khulna road is coming to an end. Along with this route, the distance between Barisal and Khulna has reduced to about 30 km.
By doing this, from now on the people of 6 districts of Barisalar division will be able to communicate with Khulna, Mongla sea port and Benapole land port continuously by road in a short time and easily.
According to the Road Department, the distance from Barisal to Khulna via Gopalganj is about 147 km. Whereas the distance from Barisal to Pirojpur to Khulna is about 117 km. That is, to go to Khulna from Gopalganj via Pirojpur, one has to travel less than 30 km. However, because of the Ferries on the Raw River in Pirojpur, it took more time to go to Khulna than Gopalganj. On top of that, there was no end to the suffering of the passengers due to the ferry.
Barisal Nagar resident and businessman Masuk Kamal said that people of Barisal region have more contact with Khulna after Dhaka for various reasons including business and social. Bangmata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Bridge established uninterrupted road connectivity between Payra and Mongla sea ports as well as road from Payra to Benapole land port. As a result, industries will also be developed in Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalkathi, Barisal and Patuakhali along the Barisal and Khulna regional highway. Apart from this, the suffering of people traveling to India for various reasons including medical treatment from Barisal region will also be reduced.
Ziaur Rahman, a resident of Pirojpur Sadar, said that if you want to go to Jhalkathi, Barisal, Patuakhali or Sagarkanya Kuakata, you have to cross the river. And if the weather was bad, it would have been unimaginable to cross the river. Also, there was the irony of the ferry, no matter how much traffic there was, there was not more than one ferry, so if you missed the ferry, you had to sit on the wharf for at least 40 minutes. All the ironies will end with traffic on the bridge.
College students Moni and Sajib, residents of Kaukhali’s Bekutia area, said that a revenue officer died two days ago after falling into the river from Paltun in Ferighat. He spent many days risking his life in hostile weather. But with the construction of this bridge, they can now easily go to and from Pirojpur Sadar along with their college. And they think that the cost will also decrease.
However, the bus drivers plying on the Khulna route via Barisal-Pirojpur-Bagerhat are looking at reducing the suffering more than the cost reduction. According to them, there was no lack of suffering among the passengers plying on this route only because of the Kacha river ferry. Passengers can now easily connect with Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Jessore, Khulna and Mongla from Patuakhali, Barguna, Bhola, Barisal and Jhalkathi. Along with this, internal tourism including Sundarbans and Sagarkanya Kuakata adjacent to Bagerhat will also develop. This will increase passenger reliance on this road and expand transport business.
All in all, the people of 11 districts of South and South Western regions are happy with the construction of the bridge over the river.
