Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam said that lack of coordination is responsible for solving other problems including traffic congestion in Dhaka city.

Mayor said, ‘Dhaka city has many problems. Which I call challenges rather than problems. In these cases there is also a lack of coordination. This lack of coordination is a big challenge for urban development. This seems to be the biggest challenge for me as a city servant.’

He said these things at the certificate distribution ceremony after the two-day training workshop for city journalists organized by City Reporters Forum (CRF) at the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) auditorium on Saturday (September 3) afternoon.

Referring to the major challenges of occupying canals and footpaths and solving traffic congestion problems in Dhaka, Atiqul Islam said, ‘We are working to solve these problems. Success will come to us, it must come. We are saving the canal. Freeing the sidewalk. I am doing various things to get rid of the traffic jam. These works are being done in coordination with everyone.

He said, ‘We live in this city. Our children are growing up here. We have a responsibility to this city. We can fulfill our responsibility to the city by throwing garbage in the right place, obeying the law, and not occupying illegally.

Urging to verify the facts and publish the truth, the DNCC Mayor said, ‘Journalists are the mirror of the society. You are the one who releases information and news to people. However, the truth must be revealed after verifying the information. It is possible to build a beautiful and accountable society and state through your constructive news. I hope you will highlight all the problems, wants, lacks, inconsistencies of the city. Only then we can solve them and make it habitable for people.’

At the end of the meeting, Mayor Atiqul Islam said, ‘There is no alternative to training for increasing skills. For those who are doing urban journalism, measures will be taken to organize training through the city corporation. He also announced to make arrangements so that journalists can go abroad for training and see the development of the city.

Director General of PIB Zafar Wazed, President of City Reporters Forum Adilur Rahman and others were present in the certificate distribution ceremony of the training workshop of city journalists.
