The price of ginger and garlic has increased in Sylhet

In Sylhet, the price of ginger and garlic has increased by Tk 10-20 per kg within a week. However, the prices of onion, egg and lentils are stable. And the price of chillies is fluctuating throughout the week.

In the wholesale market of the city, raw chillies are sold at Tk 30 to Tk 35 per kg, but in the retail market it is sold at Tk 80 to Tk 100. Last week, raw chillies were sold at Tk 130 to Tk 150 per kg in the retail market, but at Tk 25 in the wholesale market.

On Saturday (September 3), a number of markets including Rikabibazar, Sobhanighat, Amberkhana, Bandarbazar, Medical Road and Kazirbazar in Sylhet city were seen.

When asked why there is such a difference in the price in the wholesale and retail markets, the retail traders say that if you bring raw chillies as sacks from the wholesale market, the price is available at the rate of Tk 35 per kg. As they buy three to four kg of pepper, the wholesalers do not reduce the price much. They are buying raw chillies at Tk 45 to Tk 50 per kg and selling them in 100 or 200 gms in the retail market. So forced to sell for 80 to 100 taka.
