Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her joy by wearing gold bangles given by tea workers. He said, ‘Tea workers gave me this gift by collecting four annas and eight annas. I have never received such a great honor, such a great gift.’
The Prime Minister said these things while speaking to the tea workers of Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sylhet and Chittagong on Saturday (September 3) afternoon.
Sheikh Hasina said, ‘You brought gifts (gold bangles) to meet me at Ganabhaban. I still have that gift in my hand. But I did not forget. To me it is the most valuable asset.’
Pointing out that tea workers always vote for boat brands, the Prime Minister said, ‘Tea workers are citizens of our country. But at one time they did not have citizenship. There were no houses. As tea workers always vote for boat brands, we have tried to solve your problems.’
The tea workers went on strike for 20 consecutive days to demand that the daily wage be increased from Tk 120 to Tk 300. Later, with the intervention of the Prime Minister, they returned to work with a wage of 170 taka.
100,000 workers of 241 tea gardens of the country have been protesting since August 9 to demand an increase in daily wages. For the first four days, the workers observed a two-hour strike every day. Then they started observing a full-day strike from August 13.
Then on August 27, the announcement of new wages came after the Prime Minister’s meeting with Bangladesh Tea Association (BTA), an organization of tea garden owners. Then the workers return to work in their respective gardens.
However, the tea workers demanded to talk to the Prime Minister about their happiness and sorrows and demands. In view of their demands, this video conference was organized today.
