Dhaka: Police have arrested four hijras on charges of extortion in public transport in Uttara Paschim area of the capital. If they did not get the money they demanded, they ransacked bus counters and buses.
They were arrested on Saturday (September 3) around 10:30 am in front of BNS Tower in Uttara Sector 7.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara Paschim Police Station Mohammad Mohsin said, the arrested are Moushumi Hijra (32), Anika Hijra (19), Tuli Hijra (24) and Duli Hijra (25). They used to extort various vehicles in this area for a long time. They ransacked counters and cars when they were not paid the money they demanded. He behaved obscenely with the passengers.
OC said, this morning the accused demanded 2000 taka from the manager of Ena Paribahan, Ziaul Haque, in front of BNS Tower in Uttara Sector 7. When he refused to pay, they started misbehaving with the passengers. At one point, Ziaul Haque agreed to pay 500 rupees. But the hijras are adamant about the money they demand. At one point, they took 1010 rupees from Jiya’s pocket and kept clamoring across the counter for another 490 rupees. Finally, when Zia told the police, the police went and arrested 4 people. In this incident, Ziaul Haque filed a case under the Speedy Trial Act as the plaintiff.
