Thousands of leaders and workers of BNP and other organizations participated in this rally with large-sized national flags and party flags, colorful banners-festoons, portraits of Ziaur Rahman-Khaleda Zia-Tareek Rahman and various musical instruments. There were also horse carts and elephants in the rally.
Standing on the truck before the rally, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, ‘Through this rally we will inform the entire country and this government that BNP is now the biggest party. This party was founded by martyred President Ziaur Rahman, the announcer of the country’s liberation war, advocate of multi-party democracy and shaper of modern Bangladesh.
“The one who strengthened this party, developed it, established it among the people, is our chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia. He is still struggling for this democracy and is in a state of incarceration in the false case of this fascist Awami League government, in a very sick state.’
Mirza Fakhrul, referring to the sacrifices of the party’s leaders and workers at different times since its establishment, including the killing of youth leader Shaon Pradhan in Narayanganj on the anniversary of its establishment, said, “You have seen that a few days ago, our students’ party in Bhola while carrying out the program of our movement to demand increase in the price of fuel and reduction in the price of daily necessities. Leader Noore Alam and volunteer party leader Abdur Rahim were martyred in police firing.
‘This government has very deliberately banished democracy from Bangladesh today. Our leader who has fought for democracy all her life is under house arrest. Our leader Acting Chairman has sentenced him in a false case and exiled him abroad. Harassing us with false cases against 35 lakh people.’
He also said, ‘When people are agitating to get their voting rights back, they (the government) think they will suppress this movement by stealing, disappearing, killing and torturing them. This BNP was born to establish democracy.
‘From Bakshal, Martyr President Ziaur Rahman established multi-party democracy from one-party rule by forming BNP. National leader Begum Khaleda Zia has given parliamentary democracy by bringing BNP forward and establishing democracy by fighting dictatorship. Even today the people of the country are struggling, fighting for democracy. We are loudly saying that we want to remove this Awami League fascist and establish a truly democratic government for the sake of democracy. If we want to bring back democracy in the country, let’s unite today and defeat this government by occupying the streets and holding a durbar movement.’
In the rally, the BNP Secretary General also raised demands for resignation of the government, dissolution of parliament, transfer of power to neutral government, release of Khaleda Zia.
The BNP Secretary General announced the program of protest meeting across the country on Friday and Saturday across the country to protest the death of Shaon of Narayanganj.
