Borrow diesel subsidy under consideration: Agriculture Minister
Dhaka, September 1, 2022 (BASS): Agriculture Minister and Awami League presidium member Dr. Md. Abdur Razzaq.
He said, if the Russia-Ukraine war does not stop and if the price of diesel does not decrease in the international market, we have to do something about diesel, so that the production cost of farmers decreases.
The minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the research project workshop titled ‘Sustainable management of underground water for food security’ in the northwestern region of Bangladesh at the BRAC Center conference room in Mohakhali, capital, on Thursday. Bangladesh Agricultural University and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization of Australia organized the workshop at the Institute of Water Modelling.
The minister said, currently the price of diesel is very high. This will increase the cost of production during Boro season. Just like fertilizer is subsidized, diesel will be subsidized if needed in Boro. He said, due to lack of rain, Aman planting is being disrupted. Now is the rainy season, according to the normal rules it is supposed to rain, but it is not happening. If there is no rain, the production of aman may be less.
The minister also said, ‘We don’t want to be dependent on anyone for food. That is why the government is working to be self-sufficient in food.
Stating that importance is being laid on developing ‘sustainable irrigation management’ in food security, the minister said, ‘We are working on sustainable management of underground and surface water. On the one hand, work is going on to increase the use of surface water in irrigation, on the other hand, the irrigation efficiency is being increased by using buried pipes (underground pipes).
