In Sirajganj there were incidents of chases and clashes with BNP activists and police. At least 20 people, including the police, were injured by brickbats, rubber bullets and tearshells.
The clash took place in the district BNP office area on EB Road in the city on Thursday (September 1) afternoon.
Many of the injured have been admitted to local hospitals. However, the names of the injured were not immediately available.
Sirajganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Jasim Uddin said, on the occasion of BNP’s founding anniversary, the leaders and activists gathered at the district BNP office and Bhasani auditorium premises on EB Road in the city.
On the way back after the discussion meeting organized by the district BNP, suddenly the BNP workers started chaos and exploded cocktails. When they stopped, they started throwing bricks at the police.
Clashes broke out between the two sides when the police resorted to lathi charge to bring the situation under control.
Tear shells and rubber bullets were fired to bring the situation under control. At least 20 people including 7 policemen were injured.
Earlier, during a district BNP rally, a Chhatra Dal worker was arrested with a sharp weapon during street searches. Currently the situation is under control. Additional police are deployed in the district BNP office area.
District BNP General Secretary Saidur Rahman Bachchu denied the allegations of attack on the police and said that at least 15 leaders and workers of the BNP were injured by the rubber bullets and tearshells of the police.
