The information capacity of Rangpur Meteorological Office has decreased more than before. After nearly 10 years of inactivity, the office’s radar was supposed to be relaunched this year with a donation from Japan, but it has not yet happened. Due to Corona, building construction and office indoor work has been going on at a slow pace since October last year.

Meanwhile, Meteorological Office sources said that the Japanese are building two radars in Bangladesh. Now their construction work is going on in Gazipur. After this work will start in Rangpur. The radar will be installed after the construction of a twenty-storied building worth Tk 200 crore. The Japan-made radar will provide advance information on the north-western part of the country by monitoring the adverse weather, can monitor clouds 500 km away, and provide information on the 24-hour advance of the storm. When it is activated, there will be no delay in receiving early warning of natural disasters and earthquakes.

AKM Karul Hasan, engineer and assistant meteorologist of Rangpur Meteorological Office, said that in the year 1977-78, 2.50 acres of land was acquired in Alamnagar area of Rangpur city and a meteorological, radar and earthquake observatory under the Bangladesh Meteorological Department was established in its own building. It started its journey to assist the Dhaka head office in forecasting inclement weather including daily weather, earthquake measurements.

The official said that the radar was installed in 1999 with the funding of the Japanese government and their technical assistance at a cost of around 100 crore rupees. The nine-year-old radar was in operation until 2009 when it malfunctioned. Kalbaisakhir originates from the climate of the north-western part of the country. The radar of Rangpur Meteorological Office will provide information in advance of this storm. As the radar has been useless for almost 10 years, the local residents now have to rely on the delay information of the Dhaka Meteorological Office.

The assistant meteorologist said, ‘When the radar center becomes operational, a new level of development will be added to Rangpur division. It will provide forecast of rainfall, heat level and many other advance information. The operation of Rangpur Meteorological Office is now going on with the old and modern equipment of measuring water vapor. At present, the Meteorological Office has a machine for reporting temperature, air pressure and earthquakes. Currently we are providing various messages and pictures every 3 hours directly in Dhaka through advanced technology.’

Agronomist and Additional Director Obaidur Rahman Mandal said, ‘Rangpur region is agricultural. Due to climate change, agricultural work is becoming more and more difficult day by day. In this situation, it is becoming more difficult for the farmers as they do not know the advance message of natural calamities. Farmers are unable to prepare for the weather. However, arrangements are being made to provide advice to farmers depending on the weather.’
