In Comilla’s Nangalkot, more than a hundred people, including the police, were injured in the clashes between the ruling Awami League and BNP activists.
The incident took place on Wednesday from 10 am to 12 noon in Nangalkot Municipal Market, Railgate, Lotus Chattar and surrounding areas.
Police fired tearshells and live rounds to bring the situation under control. At that time, police station OC Farooq Hossain and four policemen were injured.
During the clash, various shops including the offices of BNP were vandalized in the Lotus square of the municipal headquarters and in the surrounding area. Banners and several festoons along with a motorcycle were set on fire.
Apart from this, 27 students of Nangalkot Arifur Rahman Government High School were given first aid at the Upazila Health Complex after the police fired tearshells.
10/15 people including BNP workers Main Uddin, Swapan, Russell, Noornabi and Farhad were seriously injured in the clash.
On the other hand, at least 20 activists including Awami League’s Ruhul Amin, Saiful Islam, Nazmul, Masud Alam Miyaji, Ashiqur Rahman, Farooq were injured. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals including Upazila Health Complex and Comilla Medical College Hospital.
According to sources, upazila BNP organized a protest rally at Khila autorickshaw stand of Paur Bazar under the leadership of former BNP MP Abdul Gafur Bhuiya on Wednesday morning to demand the increase in prices of daily necessities and Khaleda Zia’s permanent release.
BNP leaders and activists took out a protest march after the rally. At that time, while crossing the municipal market, they encountered a procession of Awami League. At this time, the two parties chased each other for at least two hours, clashed and threw stones and stones.
In this regard, former MP of BNP Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan said, on the way to leave after the protest rally, the leaders and activists of Awami League and other organizations attacked us suddenly. About a hundred of our activists were injured in this. At least 20 of the injured have been admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
Upazila Awami League joint convenor Chadek Hossain Bhuiyan said that Nangalkot was disturbed and riots were carried out under the leadership of former BNP member of parliament Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan. However, he claimed that none of their leaders were injured in the clash.
Comilla Superintendent of Police Abdul Mannan said, BNP has created chaos by organizing a rally without prior permission. They attacked police unprovoked and vandalized police vehicles. Four policemen including the OC of the police station were injured in the attack.
