Through the Ministry of Food, the government will import 500,000 tons of wheat from Russia at the G2G level at a cost of 21.5 million US dollars (two thousand 42.5 million taka). Simultaneously, 300,000 tons of parboiled and parboiled rice will be imported from India and Vietnam.
On Wednesday afternoon, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal chaired the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement held virtually and approved three separate proposals in this regard.
Later, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division. Abdul Barik announced the decision of the meeting in a virtual press briefing.
He said that the government will import a total of 500,000 tons of wheat from Russia. This wheat will be bought at Tk 40 per kg.
In response to a question, he said that the price of wheat purchased from Russia will be paid in dollars.
However, the additional secretary did not explain how Bangladesh will pay the price in dollars amid the US ban on transactions with Russia due to the Ukraine war.
However, on August 25, an inter-ministerial meeting in the Cabinet Division discussed how to import from Russia as an alternative to avoid the ban.
Abdul Barik said that the purchase order for the import of 230,000 metric tons of rice from India and Vietnam has been approved by the purchase committee.
He also said that this purchase will be done at the government level of the two countries.
