The government has decided to import 500,000 tons of wheat from the country amid discussions to buy fuel oil from Russia. The government will pay this money for buying wheat in dollars. It will cost 40 taka 85 paisa per kg of wheat. According to that, the total cost will be 2 thousand 42 crore 50 lakh taka.
Apart from this, 100,000 tons of rice will be bought from India and 230,000 tons of rice from Vietnam.
These decisions were taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Procurement under the chairmanship of Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday. After the meeting, Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division. Abdul Barik told reporters about these decisions in a virtual press briefing.
5 lakh tons of wheat is coming from Russia
The government is thinking of buying oil from Russia due to the rise in global fuel oil prices. However, in which currency the price of oil will be paid, it has not been decided yet. Meanwhile, the government has decided to buy wheat from the country. After the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Bangladesh, like other countries in the world, faced a crisis in importing wheat. The crisis intensified last May when India, the largest supplier of wheat to Bangladesh, stopped exporting. In this reality, the government decided to buy wheat from Russia.
After the cabinet meeting regarding government procurement, the additional secretary of the cabinet department said. Abdul Barik said that the proposal to import 500,000 tons of wheat from Russia at G2G level has been approved. The price of wheat per kg has been fixed at Tk 40.85. The total cost will be 2 thousand 42 crore 50 lakh taka.
When asked in which currency wheat will be bought, he said, ‘Our proposal has been given in Rs. In the meeting, there was no discussion about which currency to buy. But will be bought in dollars. According to that, it will take 21 million 50 million US dollars. Calculated at 95 rupees per dollar. 430 USD per ton will be required. ‘
3 lakh 30 thousand tons of rice will come from India and Vietnam
The meeting approved the proposal to import one lakh tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice from India. This rice will be imported at G2G level. It will cost 417 crore five lakh taka. 70 thousand tons of rice will come through the port. The price of rice will be Rs 42.13 per kg. 30 thousand tons of rice will come by land. It will cost 40.70 rupees per kg of rice. And the price per ton will be 443.50 USD.
Apart from this, the proposal to import 230,000 tons of Thai non-basmati rice at G2G level from Vietnam has been approved. The price of bringing rice from Vietnam will be Tk 50 and Tk 47 per kg respectively. The import of 330,000 tons of rice from the two countries will cost 119,020,000 US dollars, which is 1,130,690 taka in local currency.
1 lakh 60 thousand tons of fertilizer will come from Dubai and Saudi Arabia
The government will buy 160 thousand metric tons of fertilizer to solve the fertilizer crisis in the country. Out of this, one lakh metric ton is MOP and the remaining 60 thousand metric ton is bulk granular urea fertilizer.
Abdul Barik said, BADC under the Ministry of Agriculture will buy 100,000 metric tons of MOP (Mureate of Potash) fertilizer from Dubai-based Falco General Trading LLC. This fertilizer will be imported through direct purchase agreement. It will cost 931 crore 49 lakh taka.
In the meeting, Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), Sabic Agri-Nutrients Company, will import 30 thousand metric tons of bulk granular urea fertilizer from Saudi Arabia in the sixth lot. It will cost 177 crore 98 lakh 20 thousand 755 taka. In the meeting, another proposal to purchase 30 thousand metric tons of bulk granular urea fertilizer through the same company with the same amount of money was approved.
