Bilateral talks were held between Bangladesh and Brunei Darussalam at Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei has expressed its interest in employing more Bangladeshi workers in their upcoming mega projects when the proposal to send more Bangladeshi workers to Brunei has been made.

Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen and Brunei Darussalam Permanent Secretary Pengiran Norhashimah binti Pengiran Mohammad Hassan led their respective countries. Bangladesh High Commissioner Nahida Rahman also attended the discussion meeting. This information was given in a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

According to the circular, the discussions covered the entire spectrum of Bangladesh-Brunei bilateral relations in the areas of immigration, trade, investment, agriculture, water bodies, fisheries and livestock, health, connectivity, defence, energy, education, culture and youth. Both sides expressed satisfaction at the existing level of bilateral engagement and reiterated their commitment to continued efforts to further expand mutual cooperation for mutual benefit in the days to come. The Permanent Secretary of Brunei lauded the socio-economic development of Bangladesh and congratulated Bangladesh for its successful qualification to be promoted from least developed country to developing country.

Both sides recognize the valuable contribution of Bangladeshi migrant workers in both countries. The Foreign Secretary stressed the need for safe, orderly and regular immigration while expressing hope for the soon signing of the proposed MoU for employment of Bangladeshi manpower in Brunei. Referring to the high demographic dividend that Bangladesh is currently enjoying, the Foreign Secretary proposed sending more Bangladeshi workers to Brunei for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Both sides agreed to further explore the possibility of cooperation in areas such as food processing, ICT, shipbuilding, tourism, infrastructure development, pharmaceuticals and jute products. Bangladesh has sought Brunei’s support for the development and promotion of Bangladesh’s halal trade sector.

The Foreign Secretary highlighted the Rohingya crisis and sought Brunei’s more active support for the speedy repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals to their homeland. The Brunei side assured all possible cooperation in this regard.

Apart from this, Brunei has also assured its support for Bangladesh’s candidature in the ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partnership.
