DRU demands removal of ‘controversial video’ of journalists

The Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has demanded the removal of the video of the statement of the system analyst of the Technical Education Board, who was arrested on the charge of involvement in the charter trade, which has been circulated on social media.

The organization described the release of a speech by a man in police custody on corruption charges to journalists as ‘unethical, deliberate and in violation of the law’.

Technical Education Board system analyst ATM Shamsuzzaman was arrested on April 1 on charges of trading more than 5,000 certificates and mark sheets. Sehela Parveen, the wife of the board chairman, and six others have been arrested for their involvement in this fraud. Later on April 22, Board Chairman Ali Akbar Khan was removed from the post.

Meanwhile, a video of Shamsuzzaman’s interrogation has gone viral on social media, where he claims to have bribed some journalists.

However, the journalists mentioned in the video have been calling this statement a lie

In a joint statement on Friday, DRU Acting President Shafiqul Islam Shamim and General Secretary Mohi Uddin condemned and protested the ‘dissemination of questionable information’ through this video.

And if there is evidence in favor of the complaint, DRU also called for bringing it under justice through a fair investigation.

“Just as it is not the job of the organization to protect a member of the organization when he commits illegal acts, it is also a bad mentality to embarrass the media to publish one’s verbal statements on social media without completing the investigation and before being found guilty in the trial,” the statement said.

The statement demanded immediate withdrawal of the ‘controversial audio-video content’ from social media as well as bringing the real culprits to justice through a fair investigation.
