Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CHUTE) will remain closed till May 9, not indefinitely, according to the new decision. However, the academic activities will start from May 12 (Sunday). This decision was taken at the meeting of Chuet Syndicate which started at 3:30 pm on Saturday (April 26). This is what the assistant registrar (coordination) of Chuet Muhammad Rashedul Islam said.
Chuet Student Welfare Director Prof. Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim told Bangla Tribune that the syndicate meeting was held in the afternoon. I am not a syndicate member. However, I heard that the academic activities will be closed for some time. But students can stay in the hall. At present the situation in Chuet is calm.
Meanwhile, Chuet assistant registrar (coordination) Muhammad Rashedul Islam said that the situation of Chuet is calm on Friday. Students did not protest. suspended their movement. But none of the students left the hall. In a meeting with university teachers on Thursday (April 25) night, the students said they want to return to class-exams. Due to this, the university and the hall have demanded to withdraw the decision to close.
Chuet Registrar (Additional Duty) Prof. Dr. In a circular signed by Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir, it was said on Thursday afternoon, due to the situation arising from the untimely death of two talented students of the university in a tragic road accident on April 22, the 151st emergency meeting of the Academic Council was held on Thursday (April 25) under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor. All academic activities (including examinations) at undergraduate/post-graduate level of the university were decided to be suspended for an indefinite period.
It also said that male students were directed to vacate the hall by 5 pm on Thursday (April 25) and female students by 9 am on Friday (April 26). In the syndicate meeting on Friday afternoon, besides fixing the date of closure of the university, the Chuet administration allowed the students to stay in the hall.
Earlier on Monday (April 22) at 4 pm, two Chuet students riding a motorcycle were killed by a bus in the area adjacent to Selina Quader Chowdhury College on Chittagong Kaptai Road of Rangunia Upazila. Another student was injured.
The deceased in the accident are Shanto Saha, a 2020 batch student of Chuet Civil Engineering Department and Taufiq Hossain, a 2021 batch student of the same department. Shanta Saha is the son of Kajal Saha of Narsingdi Sadar. Taufiq Hossain is the son of Mohammad Delwar Hossain of Sudharam Upazila of Noakhali District.
Zakaria Himu was injured in this incident. He is a student of 2021 batch of civil engineering department. He is currently under treatment in the hospital.
Since the accident, the students have been protesting with road blockade for 10-point demands including safe roads. Three buses of Shah Amanat Paribahan are burnt in protest of students. Several vehicles were vandalized. Passengers of Kaptai road suffered for four days.
