It is known that this joint military exercise will take place next month. Chinese news agency Xinhua, citing China’s Ministry of National Defense, said on Thursday that the joint exercise would be based on the consent of China and Bangladesh. A contingent of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will arrive in Bangladesh in early May to join it. The training exercise will be held as part of the UN’s existing system of counter-terrorism and peace-building efforts, it said.

What did China say?
China’s Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Senior Colonel Wu Qian said that the PLA will send a team to Bangladesh for the joint military exercise called ‘Golden Friendship-2024’ with the Bangladesh Army in the first half of May. He said, ‘This joint exercise will take the anti-terror operation of the United Nations peacekeeping forces as a model. Along with this, it will also give importance to anti-kidnapping, elimination of terrorist hideouts.’

As a result, Beijing is also hopeful that the relationship between China and Bangladesh will deepen. Wu Qian said, ‘The military forces of China and Bangladesh are going to hold joint training exercises for the first time. It will strengthen mutual understanding and friendship. It will also deepen the exchange and cooperation between Bangladesh and China.

Location of India
China has repeatedly entered Indian territory. China also claims parts of Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. However, New Delhi will keep an eye on this exercise, said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. He said, ‘We monitor all kinds of incidents in our neighboring states or elsewhere. We pay particular attention to events that may affect our economy and security. We also take necessary steps in all those matters.’

Bangladesh-India relations
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said that although China is a development partner of Bangladesh, Dhaka’s relationship with them or any other country cannot be compared to India-Bangladesh relationship. He also said that Bangladesh has a ‘blood relationship’ with India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also given a message to improve bilateral relations with Bangladesh. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to visit India after the Lok Sabha elections.
