Correspondent: The financial intelligence department of Bangladesh Bank has sent a letter to the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) seeking information about the cash of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family members.

Hafizul Islam, the deputy director of the head office of the organization, sent this letter last Monday asking for the cash information of Benazir Ahmed and his family members in banks and financial institutions. A source in the ACC confirmed this information to today’s newspaper on Thursday.

BFIU has been requested in a letter to provide this information to ACC by May 15. In that letter, the bank accounts of Benazir Ahmed’s wife and children have also been summoned.

Apart from cash, ACC has written to various departments of the government including joint stock, sub-registry office, asking to know the information about FDR, savings certificates and movable and immovable assets.

In this regard, an ACC official said, as part of the investigation into the assets of Benazir Ahmed, the letter has been issued seeking to know all the details including his financial transactions. After receiving the reply to the letter, the next process will start.

Earlier, on April 22, the ACC formed a committee to investigate allegations of irregularities-corruption, abuse of power and acquisition of illegal wealth by the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.

The next day on April 23, after the hearing of the writ petition, the High Court asked for a report on the progress of the committee’s activities within the next two months.
