The Teesta Save River Save Sangam Parishad has formed a human chain to demand the Prime Minister’s promise to start the Teesta mining and master plan work and the non-implementation of six points including the Teesta water distribution agreement. On Thursday (April 25), they held this program simultaneously in front of the Upazila Parishads of Dimla, Nilfamari, Jaldhaka, Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat, Kaliganj, Aditmari, Sadar, Gangachra, Rangpur, Kaunia, Pirgacha, Ulipur, Kurigram, Rajarhat and Sundarganj in Gaibandha.

Principal Nazrul Islam Haqqani, Central President of Sangram Parishad in Rangpur and General Secretary Shafiat Rahman spoke at Hatibandha in Lalmonirhat. Speakers in the human chain that lasted from 11 am to 12:30 pm said that the lives of 2 crore people of the Teesta basin, which have been damaged by floods and droughts, are now in danger. They demanded the implementation of the Titta Grand Plan promised by the Prime Minister by allocating money in the upcoming budget not from China-India, but from their own financing.

The participants said that if the master plan is not implemented by mining the Teesta, the wildlife livelihood of the region will be destroyed due to the adverse effects of climate change. Speakers also warned of strict agitation including hartal if the excavation work does not start. At that time, they also demanded to stop various projects of multinational companies in the name of allocation of special land in Teesta Char area.

Hundreds of people from Teesta took part in the program. At the end of the human chain, the crowd handed over the memorandum to the prime minister in the hands of executive officers of 12 upazilas with a protest march.

Construction of agricultural cooperatives, food processing and agro-based industries under protection, preservation of interests of farmers affected by Teesta erosion, resettlement of landless, homeless and refugees including fisherfolk affected by river erosion, de-encroachment of Teesta branches and tributaries including Teesta occupied by land robbers and corporate companies, illegal sand from the river He demanded strict legal action against the miners, compensation for the victims in the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan and employment of the people of the Teesta Bank on a priority basis in the implementation of the project.
