Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan administered the oath to three newly appointed judges in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

They were sworn in at the Judges’ Lounge of the Supreme Court on Thursday (April 25).

The oath ceremony was conducted by the Registrar General. Golam Rabbani

Earlier on Wednesday (April 24) the Ministry of Law issued a notification in this regard.

According to Article 95(1) of the Constitution, the President has appointed three judges of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court as Judges of the Appellate Division from the date of swearing in, the notification said.

The three judges are Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz of the High Court, Justice Md. Shahinur Islam and Justice Kashefa Hossain.

At present there are five judges in the Appellate Division including the Chief Justice. The Appellate Division now has eight judges after the appointment of three.

Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafeez joined the District Court as a lawyer in 1982 after obtaining LLB and LLM degrees from Dhaka University. The latter was enrolled as a lawyer in 1985. He was appointed as an Additional Judge in the High Court Division on 27 April 2003. Two years later, on 27 April 2005, he was appointed as permanent.

Justice Shahinoor Islam was appointed as Munsef (Assistant Judge) on April 20, 1983 in 1983 after obtaining his law degree from Rajshahi University. Later in 2001 he was promoted as District and Sessions Judge. In 2010, he was appointed as the Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal.

Later, on March 22, 2012, he became a member of the International Criminal Tribunal-II. He was appointed as Additional Judge of High Court Division on August 5, 2013. Two years later he was appointed as a permanent judge. On October 11, 2017, Justice Md. Shahinur Islam was appointed as the Chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal. However, he was brought back to the High Court on February 27 this year.

Justice Kashefa Hossain holds BA and MA in English Literature and LLB from Dhaka University. He later obtained an LLM degree from the University of London. He also completed a diploma in French.

Justice Kashefa Hossain was enrolled as a lawyer in the District Court in 1995 and the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 2003. Later on August 5, 2013, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division. After two years, he was appointed as a permanent judge.
