Recently, 57 Bangladesh Bank officials quit their jobs. This information was informed in an office order of the central bank last Tuesday (April 23). It is known that these officials have left Bangladesh Bank to join other jobs including Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS).
Incidentally, once upon a time, many people used to leave jobs like teaching in BCS, public universities and come to the central bank. But now it is the opposite. Some believe that the tendency to leave central bank jobs is increasing due to frustration with the lack of central bank autonomy and reduced job opportunities.
A deputy director and an officer are among those who resigned. The remaining 55 are assistant directors. The resignation of 48 of them will be effective today, Thursday (April 25). Besides, resignation of one person each on March 31, April 15 and April 16, two persons on April 18 and four persons on April 21 have been effective.
Most of these officers who left their jobs were working in various departments of the central bank’s head office. Besides, 3 people were working in Khulna and Barisal office, 2 people in Sylhet office, 1 person each in Motijheel, Chittagong and Rangpur offices.
Those concerned say that one of the big reasons why talented people came to work in Bangladesh Bank through competitive exams was their individuality. They could take different decisions independently. Now most of the decisions including inspections are imposed from above. Many people are disappointed with this. Again, the employees of Bangladesh Bank used to get a little more facilities than any other institution.

Some officials of the central bank said that bank salaries are comparatively higher than any other job in the country. As the regulatory body of the banking sector, Bangladesh Bank had a system to encourage employment in various ways. Talents prevailed in all fields. Till 2018 four additional increments were given on the basis of academic results after joining as Assistant Director. It was discontinued from AD batch of 2019.
On completion of three years till 2022, the officers would be eligible for promotion in the next step subject to the vacancy. Even if the post is vacant now, if it is not 5 years, you don’t get promoted. Earlier 9 months foundation training was done after joining. Now brought down from one to three months. Again an additional increment was given if 80 percent marks were obtained in this training. That too is now closed. And in government job grade 5 car maintenance allowance of Tk 45 thousand per month is not given in Bangladesh Bank.
