Children are at high health risk amid the heat wave across the country, the United Nations children’s fund UNICEF has warned.

In a statement on Wednesday, the agency said, “A distressing heat wave is prevailing across Bangladesh. UNICEF is deeply concerned about the health and safety of children in these unbearable temperatures across the country.”

According to UNICEF’s 2021 Children’s Climate Risk Index (CCRI), children in Bangladesh are at ‘very high risk’ of the effects of climate change, according to the statement sent by Sheldon Yate, UNICEF’s representative in Bangladesh.

It said, “Abnormally high temperatures pose serious risks to children, especially newborns, newborns and young children. Children of this age are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and dehydration-induced diarrhoea.”

Considering the health risk of children, the government has announced a holiday in schools and colleges till April 27. UNICEF urges parents to take extra precautions to protect and keep children safe from dehydration in these situations.
