Rivers were the main source of life and livelihood. Therefore, rivers have an extremely glorious position in the literature and poetry of Bengal. But while keeping up with the mechanized industry, we have gradually destroyed the rivers. Buriganga is also a vivid example of human cruelty. In this state of the river, the number of visitors is decreasing day by day.

Buriganga river is called the life of Dhaka. This river flows through the south and west side of the capital Dhaka. The Mughals were amazed to see the tidal form of this river. When the flow of the Padma shifted far to the south due to a change in the course of the Padma, the weak stream left behind became known as the Buriganga.

On the surface, it can be seen that Shyampur’s dyeing factory, navigability crisis, polluting waste from factories, tanneries, illegal occupation by some people, dumping garbage into the river etc. are constantly increasing the water pollution. Again, the water that is mixed with the river from the Shyampur dyeing factories is far below the ideal level.

A BIWTA official, who did not want to be named, said that hundreds of boats connecting the entire southern region with the capital use the Sadarghat launch terminal to transport millions of people and goods. The Buriganga river is in a very vulnerable state due to the pollution emitted by the boats at Sadarghat. As the water of the river is getting polluted day by day, it will become difficult for people to come here in the coming days.

He said that although there are adequate arrangements in the launch, the passengers there are throwing garbage in the river. Dyeing factories emit excess waste, which is not being curbed in any way. Buriganga can be saved if everyone is aware and prevents it by enforcing the law.

It is known that once this river was full of fish. Now there is only toxic black and polluted water playing constantly. There is no end to the suffering of the people of this big city due to river pollution. Due to rotten, smelly water, Buriganga users have to face the irony on a regular basis.

There is nothing to do even if the nose is heavy with stench. The river passengers and public have to accept the stench and live with it. Children and old people struggle to cross this polluted river. People suffering from respiratory diseases are the most vulnerable.

Zahid Hasan is suffering from respiratory disease. He said, ‘I am an asthmatic. By boat from Sadarghat to Keraniganj. The smell of dirty, polluted water from the river makes it difficult for me to breathe.’

The sailors of the small dinghy boats expressed their disappointment and said that because of the extra smell in the water, the visitors do not come to visit the Buriganga river like before. It has become their responsibility to run the family. Moreover, during this time it becomes difficult to breathe as the water decreases.

A Bhola-bound launch passenger named Parvez at Sadarghat said, “I bought a ticket from the counter and am waiting for the launch to leave.” Now the ghat is very difficult. Because Buriganga water has extra smell.

City dwellers see bad smell and black water only when the water of the river decreases. As a way out of this, common people like Manjurul and Jabbar are of the opinion that these wastes should be prevented from entering the river soon. In order to reduce the pollution, we have to keep an eye on whether anyone throws waste in the river or not.

Besides, many people have frozen the waste on the banks of the river. Those waste materials should be removed from the banks of the river. The river must be dug. Because there is a severe shipping crisis. Care must be taken to ensure that city garbage does not enter the river. People need to be aware. It should be understood that if the river is saved, the country will be saved, if the country is saved, the people will be saved.
