--

According to the party sources, several leaders of the party announced to be candidates for the chairmanship in Sariakandi in the upazila elections. But on March 16, MP Sahadara Mannan called his trusted leaders and workers to his house and declared his son Mohammed Sakhawat Hossain as the candidate for the post of chairman. Then Sakhawat entered the field with his followers and leaders. According to the pre-announcement, Sakhawat filed nomination papers with his mother’s followers.

Abdul Mannan, the former organizing secretary of Awami League, was a member of Parliament for three consecutive times in Bogra-1 constituency with Sariakandi and Sonatala upazilas. After his death on 18 January 2020, his wife Sahadara Mannan became a Member of Parliament on party nomination in the by-election. He was elected Member of Parliament for the second term in the election held on January 7.

Sources from the returning officer’s office said that apart from Sahadara’s son Sakhawat, four more chairmen from Awami League and affiliated organizations are fighting for the post of chairman in this upazila. They are current chairman and president of Sariakandi Upazila Awami League Rezaul Karim (Montu), general secretary of Upazila Jubo League Ashiq Ahmed, former president of Upazila Jubo League Abdus Salam and member of Upazila Awami League and former upazila chairman Shahjahan Ali. Among them, Rezaul Karim is known as the opposition leader of MP Sahadara.
