The High Court has ordered the submission of a report regarding the implementation of the High Court’s directive to stop illegal brick kilns in Chittagong. The division bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahabub-ul-Islam gave the order yesterday after hearing the petition filed on behalf of the petitioner organization ‘Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh’ (HRPB). Senior Advocate Manzil Morsed, president of the institution, heard the petition.
Regarding the directive, he said, when the news about the operation of hundreds of illegal unlicensed brick kilns in Chittagong was published in the media, a writ was filed on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) in public interest. After the hearing, a division bench in 2020 ordered the closure of illegal brick kilns within 7 days. Along with that, instructions are also given to submit the list of illegal brick kilns. According to that, although the list has been submitted to the court, no action has been taken to stop all the illegal brick kilns yet.
The operation of brick kilns is even stopped when the monsoon season comes. Later some unlicensed brick kilns resumed operations. In this context, the writ petitioner filed an application on its behalf seeking instructions to prevent illegal invata from continuing in Chittagong. Later, the court investigated the operation of the unlicensed illegal brick kiln and took action and was asked to submit a report to the court within 3 weeks along with an affidavit.
Advocate Manzil Morsed was assisted by Advocate Sanjay Mondal, Advocate Zahid Talukder and Advocate Salim Reza in the hearing. Assistant Attorney General Mudasir participated in the hearing for the government.
