Diarrhea outbreaks are increasing day by day in Patuakhali amid intense heat; A delegation of IEDCR has come to the district to investigate the reason.

Patuakhali Medical College Hospital supervisor Dilruba Yasmin Liza informed this information on Tuesday afternoon.

He said, a seven-member delegation of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has arrived in Patuakhali to investigate the outbreak of diarrhoea.

Dilruba said that the delegation of IEDCR started the formal search process from Patuakhali Medical College Hospital.

He said, “Currently Patuakhali has the highest number of diarrhea patients in Barisal division. So a team from IEDCR has come to conduct an outbreak investigation on behalf of the government. We are extending maximum cooperation to the delegation.”

There are seven members in the delegation – the medical officer of IEDCR and the head of the delegation. Mainul Hasan, Assistant Professor (Epidemiologist) of IEDCR. Muidur Rahman, Medical Epidemiologist Sadia Sultana, Faridpur Sadarpur Upazila Health Officer Sumaiya Akhtar Suma and three medical technologists.

Mainul Hasan, head of IEDCR’s delegation, told reporters, “We will collect various data and samples for the next three days from patients admitted to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital and Upazila Health Complex, source of drinking water and water used for daily use, time and type of infection etc.”

Later, he said that the reasons and results obtained through experiments and researches will be submitted to the relevant government offices.

According to the information of the District Civil Surgeon office, 110 people have been admitted to various government hospitals in the district due to diarrhea in 24 hours. Out of this, the number of newly admitted patients in Patuakhali Medical College Hospital is 41. 779 people were admitted to this hospital in one week; 770 people have recovered and returned home.

Since January this year, 5 thousand 794 people have been admitted with diarrhea and among them 5 thousand 345 people have recovered. Half of them were infected in the last month.

The Civil Surgeon’s Office said that the district still has about 3,000 bags of IV saline in stock.
