The 60th edition of the international art exhibition ‘Venice Art Biennale’ has started in Italy. Bangladesh has participated for the fifth time with 90 countries of the world.

The exhibition, titled ‘Yawning for Harmony: In the Crisis of Civilization’, which started on Saturday, will continue till November this year.

Liaquat Ali Lucky, Director General of Shilpakala Academy, inaugurated the Bangladesh Pavilion at the exhibition on Thursday evening local time.

Bangladesh Ministry of Cultural Affairs Joint Secretary Nafriza Saima, Milan Consulate Consul MJH Javed, Venice Consul Fabrizio Ippolito Di Avino and Bangladesh Pavilion Curator Viviana Vannucci were present.

The paintings of four Bangladeshi painters are being exhibited at this year’s event, which has been going on for six months. The artists are: Ekushey medalist painters Shahjahan Ahmed Bikas, Abdur Rab, Shahed Kabir Talukdar and Mahbooba Karim.

Since its inauguration, the number of local expatriate Bangladeshis as well as visitors from Italy and other countries has been increasing to see the image of Bangladesh in the pavilion.

Director General of Shilpakala Academy Liaquat Ali Lucky said, “We are proud to participate in such a prestigious event in the world with the support of Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The visitors will get a very good idea about the image and culture of Bangladesh from this event.”

Bangladesh Consulate General Office Consul MJH Javed said, “Our country and culture will spread all over the world from this event. This will create a positive attitude among foreigners towards Bangladesh and its people.”

He said that this was a part of various agreements between Bangladesh and Italy during the recent visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Italy. He hopes that friendly relations between the two countries will be strengthened by participating in various events including culture.

Starting from 1907, this art exhibition is organized every two years under the title ‘Venice Art Biennale’.
