The progress report of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation into the assets of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family has been directed to be submitted to the High Court within the next two months.

A High Court Division comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ibadat Hossain gave the order on Tuesday (April 23).

Barrister M Sarwar Hossain and Barrister Manj Kumar Bhowmik appeared for the writ in the court. Benazir Ahmed was represented by senior advocates Shah Manjurul Haque and Syed Ahmed Raza. Senior advocate Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the ACC. Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik was on behalf of the state.

Supreme Court lawyer Md Salah Uddin Reagan filed the writ in the High Court on Monday (April 22) seeking directions to investigate the assets of Benazir Ahmed and his family. The writ sought directions to search the assets of Benazir Ahmed’s family members in the light of recent newspaper reports. Also, the writ sought a ruling as to why the ACC’s inaction to search Benazir’s assets should not be declared illegal.

In the writ, the Chairman of Anti-Corruption Commission, ACC Commissioner (Investigation), ACC Commissioner (Investigation) and ACC Secretary are made defendants (respondents).

Writ petitioner’s lawyer Salah Uddin Regan said that on March 31 and April 2, a widely circulated national newspaper published a report about Benazir Ahmed’s wealth. Despite the publication of that report, the Anti-Corruption Commission did not take any action. Therefore, a writ has been filed in the High Court seeking an inquiry.

Meanwhile, in a press conference at the ACC office in Segunbagicha of the capital on Monday, Khorseda Yasmin, secretary of the organization, said that the ACC has started work by forming a three-member committee to investigate the assets of Benazir Ahmed.
