The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) today announced the 17-member preliminary squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.

The series will start from May 3.

Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman have not been included in the announced initial team as they are not in the country at the moment.

All-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin has returned to the primary team. Through this, the possibility of his return to the national team after 2022 was created for Saifuddin.

Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, chairman of the selection panel of the national team, said that the players of this team will be given priority for the two host countries of the T20 World Cup, the United States and the West Indies.

In a video message sent by BCB today, Lipu said, ‘Unfortunately, Shakib and Mustafiz are not in the country at the moment. That’s why we couldn’t keep them in the team. Soumya has injury problems. He has been kept in the team even though he is under observation. Because even with the team, he can know the team meeting sessions.’

Lipu also said, Mehdi Hasan Miraj did not get a chance in the team. But if an off-spinner gets injured, he can have a place in the team. Basically, these players will be given priority in making the team for the T20 World Cup.

The Zimbabwean cricket team will go directly to Chittagong after arriving in Bangladesh on April 28.

The first three matches of the series will be held on May 3, 5 and 7 at Chittagong Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. The two teams will then return to Dhaka for the last two matches of the series at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on May 10 and 12.
