Barisal: In the first phase of the sixth upazila parishad general election, symbols have been allocated among 21 candidates including chairman, vice chairman and female vice chairman of Barisal Sadar and Bakerganj upazilas of the district.
On Tuesday (April 23) after receiving the symbols, the candidates officially entered the campaign field.
And the candidates and their supporters are plowing the election field in the scorching heat.
According to the returning officer’s office sources, five chairman candidates, four vice chairman candidates and four female vice chairman candidates are contesting in Barisal Sadar upazila.
Four chairman candidates, three vice chairman candidates and two female vice chairman candidates are contesting in Bakerganj upazila.
A total of four people withdrew their nominations on the last day of withdrawal of nominations.
Barisal Sadar Upazila Chairman SM Zakir Hossain Motorcycle, Mahmudul Haque Khan Mamun Anars, Md. Monirul Islam (photo) Doat Kalam, Md. Mahabubur Rahman Madhu Ghora and Md. Abdul Malek got the cup pirich symbols.
Vice Chairman Md. Jasim Uddin Tala, Shaheed Mohammad Shahnewaz-Urojahaj, Md. Hadith Mir-Tuboyl and Md. Mahidur Rahman (Mahad) has been allotted book symbol. Apart from this, Nehar Begum Hanas, Maria Akhter Fatubal and Mosammat Halima Begum Kals have been allocated the symbol of women vice chairmen.
Biswas Mutiur Rahman (Badsha) Pineapple, Rajib Ahmed Talukdar Kap Pirich, Md. as Chairman in Bakerganj Upazila. Kamrul Islam Khan Motorcycle, Md. Feroze Alam Khan has been allotted Doat pen symbol.
Abdus Salam Urojahaj, brother of the local member of parliament, as vice chairman. Saifur Rahman Tala, Md. Shahbaz Mia has been allotted book symbol. Apart from this, Tahmina Begum Hans and Jahanara Begum Kals have been allocated symbols for the post of female vice chairmen.
The Returning Officer allocated symbols in the conference room of the office of the District Returning Officer before noon on Tuesday.
It is known that 26 people submitted nominations online in Barisal Sadar and Bakerganj. Among them, 12 people submitted nominations for the post of chairman. During the scrutiny, the returning officer canceled the nomination of a candidate of Bakerganj upazila. And four others withdrew their nomination.
Candidates expressed their satisfaction on getting the desired symbol allotment. They said that they will develop the area if they win.
Wahidul Islam Munsi, the returning officer and senior election officer of the district, said that citing personal reasons, candidates for the post of chairman Mizanur Rahman and Niwamat Abdullah from Bakerganj upazila have withdrawn their nomination papers. Kamrul Islam of the same upazila and Mohammad Faizul Haque Sajeeb from Barisal Sadar upazila have withdrawn their nomination papers for the post of vice chairman.
Polling will be held in Barisal Sadar and Bakerganj upazilas on May 8.
