Delwar Hossain has been declared the chairman of Singra Upazila Parishad of Natore without contesting the election. who was allegedly abducted and beaten up by a rival candidate.

District Election Officer and Returning Officer Abdul Latif Sheikh announced Delwar Hossain as the chairman after allotting symbols among the election candidates in Upazila Parishad at around 11 o’clock on Tuesday.

Earlier, two candidates filed nomination papers for the post of chairman in Singra Upazila Parishad elections. After verification, the election returning officer declared the nomination papers of two candidates Lutful Habib Rubel and Delwar Hossain as valid.

Lutful Habib Rubel is joint secretary of Singra Upazila Awami League and brother-in-law of Singra Member of Parliament and ICT State Minister Junaid Ahmed Palak. He resigned from the chairmanship of Sherkol Union Parishad to participate in the upazila elections.

In the afternoon of April 15, a group of people took the chairman candidate Delwar Hossain in a microbus from in front of Natore district election office. They dropped him in front of the house after a few hours.

It was alleged that rival candidate Lutful Habib Rubel kidnapped and beat her.

In that incident, Rubel was summoned to the Election Commission and he was also asked to show reasons from the Upazila Awami League.

Later, on April 19, after seeing Delwar in the hospital, Palak expressed his sorrow and ordered Rubel to withdraw from the election.

After that, a day before the withdrawal of nomination, Rubel withdrew from the chairmanship election on Sunday. Minhaj Uddin, chairman of Tajpur Union Parishad, submitted the nomination withdrawal letter to the District Election Officer and Returning Officer on his behalf.

As Singra Upazila Parishad had only Delwar Hossain as a candidate, the district election officer declared him elected privately in the election return ‘E Form’ on Tuesday.

Allotment of symbols to candidates in three upazilas in Natore

Voting will be held in three upazilas in Natore on May 8 in the first phase of upazila elections. The District Returning Officer has allotted the symbols among the valid candidates in this election.

District Returning Officer Abdul Latif Sheikh handed over symbols to the upazila candidates in the meeting room of the district election office at around 10 am on Tuesday.

Among the three upazilas, five chairman candidates, five vice chairman candidates, and two women vice chairman candidates were allotted symbols in Natore Sadar upazila.

In Naldanga upazila, symbols were given to eight chairman candidates, five candidates for the post of vice chairman, five candidates for the post of female vice chairman.

On the other hand, Singra Upazila chairman was elected privately without contest. In this upazila, symbols were allocated between four candidates for the post of vice chairman and three candidates for the post of female vice chairman.

At that time, the candidates who participated in the election of three upazilas were present along with the related officials. Candidates started campaigning after receiving symbols.
