Like every year, the United States State Department has published a report (for the year 2023) related to the human rights report situation of 198 countries and regions, including Bangladesh. They published this report on Monday (Tuesday in Bangladesh) in Washington.

The United States’ assessment of the situation last year is, ‘There has been no major change in the human rights situation in Bangladesh.’

According to the report, there is admissible evidence of violations of various civil and social rights, including extrajudicial killings, disappearances, inhumane torture by the government, life-threatening conditions in prisons, extrajudicial arrests, political arrests, obstruction of expression, threats to journalists, and censorship.

It added, ‘There are many cases where the perpetrators have not done anything after the violation of human rights. In most cases, appropriate action has not been taken against government officials or members of the security forces who may have been involved in human rights violations.’

The United States has been publishing such reports for nearly five decades. The country reports contained in the Human Rights Report do not rank or compare legal decisions, countries. Human rights reports inform U.S. foreign policy decisions and assist Congress, the executive branch, and immigration courts when accurate information is needed on the human rights situation.
