It has been alleged that a housewife named Lamiya Khatun (22) died due to torture by her husband in Nalchiti, Jhalkathi. The incident took place last night (Monday late night) in Subidpur village of the upazila. The police recovered the body of the housewife at 11 o’clock on Tuesday.

In this incident, the husband of the housewife Hriday Howladar (25) was arrested by the police for questioning.

According to the police and locals, Hriday Howladar of Subidpur village of the upazila beat his wife Lamia on Monday afternoon. Lamia fell ill but was not taken to the hospital. Lamia died at her husband’s home due to illness around 2 am that day. On receiving the information, the police visited the spot.

Quoting Lamiya’s father Oli Howladar, the police said that her husband Hridyo often beat his wife Lamiya to get money from her father-in-law. But as Lamiya’s father was poor, it was not possible to give the money as required. Enraged by this, her husband beat his wife Lamiya on Monday afternoon. Lamia died around 2 am that day. Lamia’s husband worked as a boy in a hotel in Barisal. They have a one-year-old son.

Denying the complaint, Lamia’s husband told the police that his wife fell ill and died suddenly. He was not beaten.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalchiti police station Md. Murad Ali said, a mystery has arisen over the death of Lamiya Khatun. Her husband has been detained for questioning. Legal action will be taken if information about the murder is found in the interrogation.
