US report on human rights situation in Bangladesh

--

The United States has commented that there has been no significant change in the human rights situation in Bangladesh in 2023. This comment was made in the annual human rights report published by the country’s foreign ministry on Monday (April 22). This report is published every year on the human rights situation of different countries of the world.

It is said that they have various reports of human rights violations in Bangladesh. Extrajudicial killings, disappearances, torture, illegal arrests have been highlighted in the report.

Apart from this, major problems in the independence of the judiciary, political arrests, barriers to expression, interference in the freedom of the press, restrictions on peaceful assembly and political programs have also been mentioned in it. The report also stated that there is no opportunity for the people to change the government through fair and free elections.

The US State Department says there are also reports of widespread impunity for human rights abuses. In most cases, the government has not taken adequate steps to identify and punish officials or members of the security forces who may be involved in human rights violations.

According to the report, there are reports that the government or government agencies have committed extrajudicial killings, including extrajudicial killings. The total number of people killed by members of the government’s security forces has not been disclosed, and no transparent steps have been taken to investigate the incidents.

Noting that extrajudicial killings have decreased compared to previous years, human rights group Law and Arbitration Center (ASC) said eight people were victims of extrajudicial killings or died in law enforcement custody between January and September 2023. Another human rights organization reported 12 extrajudicial killings at the same time.

According to the report, there are significant restrictions on freedom of expression in Bangladesh. Journalists and bloggers are forced to silence criticism of the government for fear of harassment and reprisals.
