Frog wedding! It makes a lot of noise. There were all kinds of arrangements for the wedding, Chhayamandap, Pushpamalya, Gaihlud, Ashirbad, Dhan-Durba, food. Not only that, the people who were invited to the wedding also gave various gifts including money to the frog couple. It was organized in the remote Nagshosha village of Bilmaria union of Lalpur upazila of Natore.
There is a fierce fire all over the country. No rain. In most of the areas, the water level in the tube wells is not rising due to the fall in the ground water level. As a result, people’s lives have been disrupted due to intense heat. Nature is crying for water. So in Lalpur hoping for rain, Sanatan religious people raised chaldals from house to house and married frogs.
Talking to some people in the area, it was known that the year their area is affected by no rain, they organize this kind of frog wedding for the rain. Locally it is called banga-bangi’s marriage. They have been following this tradition for generations. They believe that if you marry a frog, it will rain.
The organizers said that people are in a state of indigestion in the intense heat. Not much water is rising in the tubewell. There is no water available for cultivation in the land. Mango and lychee pods are already falling. For this reason, the wedding of frogs is organized to make it rain.
Local residents Sujit Kumar and Rabindranath Das said that this practice has been going on for many years according to traditional customs. Due to the lack of rain, everyone in this village was married to a frog. We have a kind of belief that if we marry a frog, it will rain. In that hope, rain has been prayed to God by marrying frogs.
Meanwhile, Robin Hossain, Deputy Assistant Engineer of Lalpur Upazila Public Engineering Department, said that after checking the water level in different parts of the upazila, it was found that the average level has dropped by 32 feet. Which is usually 20/22 feet. Necessary measures are being taken so that there is no shortage of fresh water anywhere.
In this regard, Upazila Agriculture Officer Pritam Kumar Hor said that even though the current month has passed, there has been no rain yet. Rabi crops and mango, litchi pods are falling due to lack of rain. The agriculture department is advising the farmers to irrigate frequently to deal with drought.
