Bangladesh Copyright Office celebrated International Copyright Day

Bangladesh Copyright Office celebrated the International Copyright Day with various events. The day is celebrated with activities like rallies, seminars and awards to raise awareness about copyright.

A colorful rally was organized in front of the copyright office at Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday (April 23) morning. The rally circled in front of the National Revenue Building and ended at the Copyright Office.

After that, a seminar titled ‘Importance of Intellectual Property in Building Smart Bangladesh’ was organized in the Conference Room of Copyright Office.

Under the chairmanship of copyright registrar Daud Mia, Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Khalil Ahmed was present as the chief guest and Imrul Chowdhury, the additional secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Chairman of the Copyright Board, was present as a special guest.

Copyright Board Member Zafar Raja Chowdhury read the keynote on the occasion and Copyright Deputy Registrar Abul Kashem Mohammad Fazlul Haque delivered the welcome speech.

At that time, Khalil Ahmad said, I am working to ensure that those who claim intellectual property get money, and that their next generation gets money. I am making a regulation for this. I would like to sit with the participants to improve them further. We are working to explain the meaning of intellectual property to the heirs of Shah Abdul Karim. Who doesn’t get royalties, why not, how to get them; I want to work on them. I want to make a better regulation compared to other countries.

Chairman of Copyright Board. Imrul Chowdhury said that the importance of copyright is immense in the current digital media era. The Copyright Act 2023 was passed in response to the ambiguities and weaknesses in the 2000 Copyright Act and many weaknesses related to digital technology. Currently, this law has been properly implemented to protect all intellectual property including music. However, he commented that not only the government, but also the concerned parties should come forward in this regard.

Intellectual Property Protection Award is given on the occasion of Copyright Day. For the year 2022, Nimphia Publication for literary work, Ayman Sadiq for software work, Anjan Chowdhury for film and Hasan Farooq Md. for art work. This award was given to Pavel Rahman.

Also Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) for Literary Compilation/Editing work for 2023, Barind Media Ltd. for Film, Md. for Art work. The award was given to Rafid Mohammad Ehsan for Saqlain Mostak and Software.
