Dhaka: Bangladesh and Qatar have signed five agreements and five memoranda of understanding on cooperation in various fields, including bilateral avoidance.

These agreements and memorandum of understanding were signed in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar at noon on Tuesday (April 23) at the Corbi Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office.

The five agreements include—the Agreement on Mutual Investment Promotion and Protection, the Agreement on Double Avoidance and Tax Evasion, the Agreement on Cooperation in Legal Matters, the Agreement on Maritime Transport and the Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Business Council between the business organizations of the two countries.

The five MoUs include—MoU on Cooperation in Diplomatic Training, MoU on Higher Education and Scientific Research, MoU on Cooperation in Youth and Sports, MoU on Manpower and MoU on Port Management.

The first of the agreements was signed by Qatari Minister of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani and the Bangladeshi Minister of Industry Noorul Majid Mahmoud Humayun, the second by Qatari State Minister for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi and Bangladeshi State Minister for Finance Wasika Aisha Khan, the third by Qatari State Minister for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi and Bangladesh Law Minister Anisul Haque, Qatar’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi and Bangladesh’s State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury in the fourth and Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) President Mahbubul in the fifth. All the MoUs were signed by Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on behalf of Qatar and the Ministers of State of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment and Ministry of Shipping on behalf of Bangladesh.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had a private meeting at Shimul Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office. Later, Prime Minister and Amir will hold a bilateral meeting with the representatives of both countries at Chameli Hall.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina warmly welcomed the Emir of Qatar with flowers at the Tiger Gate when he reached the Prime Minister’s office at 10:30 am.

This is the first high-level state visit from a Middle Eastern country after the Awami League formed the government for the fourth consecutive term under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after the January 7, 2024 elections.

This is the first visit of a Qatari emir to Bangladesh in the last two decades. Earlier in 2005, the then Emir of Qatar Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani visited Bangladesh.
