A responsible central leader of Awami League told Prothom Alo on the condition of anonymity that many times in the past amnesty has been announced for the leaders who disobeyed the party’s decision. Even former Gazipur mayor Jahangir Alam has been pardoned twice. Party leaders have been given the opportunity to stand as independent candidates to make the past parliamentary elections look competitive. Now the party is trying to re-impose control by handing over the symbol to the local elections. That is, each party has taken a different position at each time. As a result no one is giving importance to the decision of the party. Because they think they will be forgiven.

According to the constitution of Awami League, any candidate disobeying the party decision in any election will be directly expelled. But instead of punishing the independent candidates of the national elections, they were dragged into the party later. Now the leaders of Awami League are skeptical about how far it will be possible to take disciplinary action against relatives of ministers and members of parliament. There is a meeting of the Awami League Executive Council on April 30. The upazila election can be discussed and decided in that meeting. The responsible leaders of the party feel that there is nothing to do but wait until then.

Joint general secretary of Awami League AFM Bahauddin Nashim told Prothom Alo that ministers and members of parliament must understand what can happen if the party’s decision is disobeyed. Let’s see what happens in the end.
