A united effort of the world is essential for success in climate adaptation: Environment Minister

Dhaka, April 22, 2024 (BASS) : Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury has said that global cooperation is necessary for climate adaptation as climate adaptation is a challenge for the world. Adaptation is not only a challenge for LDCs, but it is a challenge for all of us, he said. Hence global solidarity is needed for this goal. Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury said these while conducting the session titled ‘High-Level Transformational Dialogue of Nap Expo 2024: A Transformed Nap for the Future’ on Monday.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the four-day United Nations Climate Adaptation Conference titled ‘National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Expo 2024’ at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC).
Saber Chowdhury said that although Bangladesh’s per capita carbon emission is only 48 percent, Bangladesh is one of the worst victims of global climate change. He said that if the global temperature rises by one degree Celsius, the cost of climate adaptation programs will increase. So everything has to be seen through the lens of climate change. Because adaptation is difficult to justify in terms of financial returns. Tackling the effects of climate change requires thinking globally but acting locally. Saber Hossain emphasized on capacity building in climate related activities and said, How can we build capacity to meet future needs? Money is very important, but so is ability.
In the session, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Simon Steel and Environment Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed and Philippine Climate Change Commission Office of the President Director Robert E.A. Borje and others spoke.
