Dhaka: The High Court has summoned four persons, including the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Chittagong, online to seek an explanation for not complying with the ban on cutting topsoil of agricultural land in Satkania.
They have been asked to explain the matter online on Tuesday (April 23) at 1 pm.
Monday (April 22) Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md. The High Court bench of Atabullah gave this order.
Lawyer Ujjal Pal was in favor of the application in the court. Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy appeared for the state.
Cropland topsoil is being cut indiscriminately in Satkania of Chittagong. There is no way to stop the erosion of cropland. In the darkness of the night, whatever is possible, the soil of the cultivated land is being cut by the excavator (digger) and delivered to the brickyard by the dumper (mini truck). In each area of the upazila, the festival of soil cutting is going on by syndicate.
A local resident named Abdul Munaf filed a writ in the High Court with the report published in the media. After hearing that writ, the High Court issued a ruling on March 19, prohibiting the cutting of topsoil. The court brought to the notice of the fact that topsoil cutting continued despite this order. Then the court summoned the concerned online.
Meanwhile, the mobile court has sentenced two people who were arrested while cutting the topsoil of agricultural land late at night in Satkaniya.
Satkania Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Milton Biswas conducted a mobile court operation in the Pathanipool area of Kaliaish Union of the upazila around 12:30 pm on Sunday (April 21).
Those who were sentenced to prison are, Nalua Union of Moishamura Morfla Bazar area. Abul Kamal (42) and son of deceased Abdul Rashid of East Bagmoa area of Padua Union of Lohagara. Ershad Hossain (38).
Policemen of Satkania police station and members of Ansar forces assisted the mobile court.
Satkania upazila executive officer Milton Biswas said that two people who were arrested while cutting topsoil were sentenced to 10 days’ imprisonment. Public interest campaign will continue.
