On the occasion of World Earth Day, a sit-in and sit-in program was held in Dhaka University (DU) to demand an end to polythene and plastic pollution.

On Monday (April 22) at 11 a.m., a dance and sit-in program was organized jointly by Amara (Dhara), Waterkeepers Bangladesh and Dhaka University Mime Action to protect Dharitri at the Swaparjit Swabandha Chatwar of the university.

At that time, the protesters were present with placards saying ‘Polythene and plastic will be banned – this beautiful world will be saved’, ‘If you cut down the forest trees – it will be destroyed in the heat’ etc. Speakers urged all government and non-governmental organizations and individuals to take initiative to create awareness. They also claim that otherwise their existence will be threatened.

In his speech, Iqbal Muhammad, the leader of Amara Raksha Dharitri (Dhara), said that the aim of Earth Day is to protect the earth from the damage of industrialization and urbanization. The dire effects of urbanization in our country have become dire. But there are no effective measures to overcome it. Plastic pollution can be avoided by using recycle, reduce and refuse systems. Plastics are now also found in breast milk.

Mir Muhammad Ali, Associate Professor of Aquaculture Department of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, said, “We have misbehaved with Earth, due to which the world is misbehaving with us.” At present the temperature is 42-45 degrees in various places. If we ourselves are not aware, the situation will be worse. Currently, there are 800 metric tons of plastic in the ocean.

Niaz Makhdum Sina, President of Dhaka University Mime Action, said that currently the temperature is around 42 degrees. But we are responsible for this, we have made the world uninhabitable by misbehaving. We have to solve it. Immediate action should be taken to stop plastic pollution.

Besides, private advisor of Bangladesh Competition Commission and co-convenor of Catch MS Siddiqui, Editor of River Bangla Faisal Ahmed, Chairman of Safer Development Foundation Ibnul Saeed Rana, Coordinator of Sundarbans and Coast Protection Movement Nikhil Chandra Bhadra and President of Bangladesh Farmers Federation Badrul Alam etc. spoke at the event. .
