The date for the return of army and border guards who fled Myanmar to Bangladesh amid fighting with armed insurgents has been postponed.

Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said the repatriation of 285 people was supposed to take place on Monday, but that has been postponed to April 25.

In response to questions from reporters at the ministry on Monday, he said, “April 22 is not happening, that is, it is not happening today. The new schedule has been fixed on April 25 to take back those fleeing from Myanmar, 285 people.

“On April 24, the Myanmar ship will arrive in Bangladesh. 144 Bangladeshi citizens were stranded in Myanmar in various ways, many were also prisoners, they will be brought by Myanmar ships. April 24 is the day after tomorrow. The next day, Myanmar’s BGP members will be taken away.”

For a long time, there has been a conflict between the army and the rebel groups in Myanmar, which has also affected the border areas of Bangladesh. Mortar shells and bullets from across the border also caused casualties.

The government sent back 330 people, including border guards and members of the armed forces, who fled the conflict in the first round on February 16.

Among them were 302 Myanmar Border Guard Police-BGP, four family members, two army personnel, 18 immigration personnel and four civilians.

After that, a total of 285 people came to Bangladesh in several rounds along the border of Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar, including members of the Myanmar Border Guard Force and army personnel.

Officials of the Myanmar division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that about 170 Bangladeshis have been stranded in Myanmar at different times. Some of them are in jail and some are under trial. Some of them were arrested after entering the Myanmar border while fishing. Among them, the issue of returning 144 people has been finalized.
