Dhaka: Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque, Member of Parliament of Habiganj-4 Constituency and Supreme Court lawyer, has applied to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the allegations of illegal acquisition of large amount of illegal wealth against the former Inspector General (IG) of Police Benazir Ahmed by abuse of power and irregularities-corruption. Suman. He also said that he will approach the High Court if the ACC does not initiate an investigation.

On Sunday (April 21), he made this request to the Chairman of the ACC. At that time, he attached the report published in Dainik Kal Kanth about Benazir with the application. In the petition, besides Benazir Ahmed, his wife Jisan Mirza, two daughters Farhin Rishta bint Benazir and Tashin Raisa bint Benazir have also been investigated and requested to take action.

When asked to know, Syed Syedul Haque Sumon told the media that the complaint about Benazir’s corruption in the newspaper, which has been headlined, has not seen any inquiry (investigation) system so far. Because if the former IGP has so much wealth, then the honest officers in Bangladesh Police will be very disappointed. Those who are honest in the country, will be greatly influenced; And those who are dishonest, they will compete fairly. If the allegations are true, they will say we all want to be Benazir. I think this is a terrible thing for the country.

When asked what to do if the ACC does not take action, Suman said, ‘Priskar, I will go to the High Court. ‘

After Sumon’s application in the Supreme Court, ACC’s senior lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told reporters, “I have come to know that barrister Syedul Haque Sumon has filed an application in the ACC based on the news published about the assets of former IGP Benazir Ahmed.” In view of his application, the ACC will investigate the complaint as per its rules and regulations. If the Commission considers that it falls within the purview of the ACC, the ACC will take action as per law.

In a question, this lawyer said, the person is not important here. Who is what is not the issue here. The ACC looks at whether the charge falls under a Scheduled Offence. The commission will see the truth in the information. There are several steps here. The application that he (Sayedul Haque Sumon) gave today will go to the committee for scrutiny. The committee will look at it and decide. After that, if the commission thinks it should be investigated in the light of the decision of the committee, they will do so.

According to the application, Benazir Ahmed was the 30th IG of Bangladesh Police. He retired on 30 September 2022. While on the job, it has been reported that he has amassed huge wealth in the name of his wife and daughters, which are not commensurate with his income.

Citing information from the report, Sumon’s plea said that Benazir Ahmed’s assets in the name of her family members were much higher than her legitimate income. As a result, there is enough reason to believe that he has acquired these assets by abusing his position and power during his tenure. As a result, I request you to take necessary legal measures to investigate the assets of Benazir Ahmed and his wife and children.
