Barisal: 6 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat of Barisal have been sentenced to two years and 6 months in prison for obstructing the work of the police and attacking them. Besides, each person is fined 5 thousand rupees.
The convicts are Munsi Mostafizur Rahman, a resident of Hazera Khatun School Road, Khilafat Majlis Nagar, Md. Hakatullah of Patuakhali Sadar Police Station of Jamaat Zakir Hossain, Abrar Hasan of Niuvhatikhana area, Tungibaria area of Barisal Sadar Upazila. Mohiuddin, joint convener of Mahanagar Swachhasek Dal, Deen Islam Iku and Masud Hasan Sajib of Mahanagar Jubo Dal.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court APP Advocate Md. Jamal Hossain said that 6 accused have been sentenced to two years and 6 months imprisonment and fined 5 thousand taka in two sections. Three defendants were present when the verdict was announced. The other three accused were absconding.
Advocate Abul Kalam Azad Imon, organizing secretary of Barisal district branch of Nationalist Lawyers Forum and handling the case, said four Jamaat-Shibir leaders and two BNP and Chhatra Dal leaders were among the convicts.
Regarding the case, Advocate Eamon said that on October 29, 2013, 19 party leaders took out a demonstration in front of Bogra Road Oxford Mission School in the city in support of the hartal. At that time the police went and stopped them. The police arrested 7 people for marching despite the barricades.
In this incident, Sub-Inspector (SI) Mojibur Rahman of Kotwali Model Police Station filed a case against 34 named BNP-Jamaat and 150 unknown persons including 7 detained persons. On April 7, 2015, SI Abu Taher of Kotwali Model Police Station submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing 63 leaders and activists of BNP-Jamaat and its affiliates.
Bench Assistant Md. Salim said that 6 people were sentenced in the case. Other accused have been acquitted.
