8 candidates of BNP in 3 upazilas in Mymensingh

--

On May 8, the first phase of polling for the 150 upazila parishad elections will be held across the country. Among them, Mymensingh district has three upazila parishads Haluaghat, Dhobaura and Phulpur. Apart from the ruling Awami League, 8 leaders of BNP and affiliated organizations have been candidates in the ongoing elections of these 3 upazilas. This has created a commotion inside and outside the party.

According to local BNP sources, BNP has taken a strict decision by calling for the boycott of the ongoing upazila elections under the current government, but Haluaghat upazila has the most candidates in the 3 upazilas of Mymensingh. Along with other candidates, five leaders of BNP and other organizations have filed nominations and are campaigning in the election field. The candidates are – Upazila BNP member Abdul Hamid and Dhaka Lawyer Forum member Adv. Hasnat Tarek, North District Mahila Dal vice-president Manowara Begum Maina, Sumi Begum, co-cottage industry secretary and former Chhatra Dal leader ABM Kajal Sarkar as vice-chairman. At the same time, two candidates filed nominations in Dhobaura upazila. Among them, the former vice-president of Upazila BNP, Shamchur Rashid Majnu, is the chairman, and Jahangir Alam Khan, the joint general secretary of the North District Juba Dal, is the vice-chairman. In addition, the former general secretary of the municipal BNP has been a candidate for the post of chairman in Phulpur upazila. Emran Hossain Pallab. However, as the BNP and the leaders of the organ organizations ran as candidates in defiance of the party’s decision, there was a mixed reaction among the local activists. They complain that the party system has collapsed due to lack of organizational structure of the party over the years. The party and Trinamool are suffering extremely.

Abdul Hamid, a member of Haluaghat Upazila BNP, said that BNP is not going to the election, but I am in the election field as an individual and will remain until the end. The party has no decision on this. Even before this, I had resigned from the party and became a candidate in the previous municipal elections.

Dhobaura upazila candidate Shamchur Rashid Majnu said, some say BNP will go to the election, some say it won’t, and some say it’s a strategy of the party. But I am not a party leader. I have been jailed by groups, I have been a victim of lawsuits and attacks. But currently many people like me in the party have no appreciation. Now many people are selling the team. I have no regrets even though I was kicked out from the team. Because I consider the expulsion order from the party to be a post or title.

However, BNP’s decision not to go to the election is seen as a strategy by Phulpur Upazila Parishad chairman candidate and BNP leader. Emran Hossain Pallab said, BNP’s decision about not going to the election is correct but I have become a candidate for the election. Because if we are not candidates, important institutions like Upazila Parishad will go to Awami League. Hopefully the team doesn’t fire me, and if they do, we’ll see.
Mymensingh North District BNP member secretary Motahar Hossain Talukdar said that many candidates have already withdrawn from the election due to BNP calling for boycott of upazila elections, many are still there. We will wait till the last day of withdrawal of nominations on 22nd April. If they do not withdraw from the election, they will be expelled from the party for life as per the decision of the party.

It is known that a total of 37 candidates are filing nominations in the three upazila parishad elections of Mymensingh. As the nomination of two of them has been cancelled, currently 35 candidates remain.

Incidentally, according to the schedule, nomination papers were selected for the first phase of the election on April 17. Appeal from April 18 till yesterday. Also today is the last time to withdraw the candidature.
