Moniruzzaman used to collect honey from Sundarbans for 30 years. He had a family with wife, two sons and two daughters. Honey collection in Sundarbans starts from April 1 every year. It’s been two months. Moniruzzaman did not go to Sundarbans on April 1 due to fasting and Eid. After Eid, he went to Sundarbans to collect honey for two weeks with a pass (permission) from Burigoalini station in Satkhira range on April 16. He left the market at home before leaving. He also took leave of his people according to custom.

The leader of the party with which Moniruzzaman went to the Sundarbans was Billal Kayal of Gabura village in Shyamnagar upazila. He told Prothom Alo that on Friday afternoon, after Asr prayers, they were extracting honey in the Phulkhali area of Kanchikata river bordering India in Dobeki camp. Before he knew anything, a fierce tiger suddenly attacked Moniruzzaman and dragged him towards the dense forest. Later, when everyone retaliated with sticks, the tiger left Moniruzzaman’s mutilated body and got stuck. Then they recovered the body and brought it to his house in Dumuria village of Gabura Union around 12 noon on Saturday.

Moniruzzaman’s wife Rahima Khatun said crying, ‘I can’t wait to bring salt. Sambal Balti is a mud house on five katha land. Husband’s earnings depended on the income. Now what to do with four boys and girls, where will you stand? The moneylender does not have much debt. I don’t know whether I can stay alive or not, how will I repay it?’ Drawing the attention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said, ‘You save tigers and widows. If you don’t stand by, no one will.’
