Police have arrested two people in connection with the killing of Chhatra League worker named Arif Miah due to internal conflict in TV Gate area of Sylhet city. They were arrested in separate raids in the city. The deceased Arif Mia is the son of Fatik Mia of Shahi Eidgah TB Gate area of the city. Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Azbahar Ali Sheikh confirmed the matter.
The arrested are – Bachchu Mia’s son Roni and Kamal Mia’s son Mamun Majumder. Both of them are former president of Sylhet District Chhatra League and 36 Ward Councilor of Sylhet City Corporation Hiron Mahmud Nipu Group.
It is known that the deceased Arif was a first year student of the government college. His opponent appeared only after joining politics. The leaders and activists of their party plan to attack him based on the spread of dominance. Accordingly, a group of Chhatra League attacked him at night in North Baluchar area under Shahparan police station on November 15. At that time, the assailants hit him with sharp weapons besides beating him severely. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Mother Ankhi Begum lodged a complaint with Shahparan police station in the name of six people regarding the attack on her son when she came home after recovering. The accused are – Juned, Anach Mia, Kudrat Ali, Kala Mamun, Sharif, Helal and Sabuj Mia of Baluchar area. Arif’s mother mentioned that the accused attacked my son in a planned manner. At that time, the attackers also beat him with sharp weapons. One of my son’s fingers was amputated by the sharp weapon of the accused Annach Mia.
Locals said that he was an active worker of District Chhatra League President Nazmul Islam Group. Last Monday around 12:00 PM, the opposition group workers attacked Arif again in the TV Gate area. Cut and stabbed with sharp weapons and left on the street. The locals took him to the Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. After admission to the ICU, the doctor declared him dead at around 1.30 am. Meanwhile, there are 23 injuries of sharp weapons in different parts of his body.
Arif’s mother Akhi Begum said, “My son had to die because he lodged a complaint with the police station against those who first killed him with intent to kill.” If I had got justice, my son would not have had to die.
According to the police, a group of terrorists attacked Arif four to five days ago. A complaint was lodged at Shahparan police station in the city regarding the attack. Because of this, he may be attacked at night.
Moin Uddin Sipan, officer in charge of Sylhet Airport Police Station, said that the killing happened because of dominance. The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family after post-mortem. The case is under process. Two people have been arrested in this incident. Attempts are being made to arrest the rest.
