Four separate courts in Dhaka sentenced 136 people, including some central leaders of BNP, to various terms of imprisonment in six cases of obstructing police work and sabotage.
Hakeem Ataullah and Mohammad Sheikh Sadi of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Court gave this verdict on Sunday and Monday. Apart from this, 5 activists of BNP have been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in a case in Rangpur.
Among the leaders and activists sentenced by the Dhaka court are BNP Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohail, Information and Research Secretary Azizul Bari Helal, Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sarafat Ali, former Jubo Dal President Saiful Alam Nirab and others.
In two months, 342 people of BNP were sentenced to prison in 23 cases in Dhaka court. And in 1 year, 427 people were sentenced in 31 cases. BNP lawyer Syed Zainul Abedin Mejbah confirmed the jailing of 136 people in two days to Samakal last night.
The court sentenced 62 activists including Khandkar Akhtar Hamid Khan Pawan, son of late BNP general secretary Khandkar Delwar Hossain, to 42 months imprisonment each in a case at Bangshal police station in the capital. The case was filed on September 13, 2018 for assaulting and obstructing the police. The court issued arrest warrant against the absent accused.
Dhaka’s CMM court sentenced 15 BNP leaders and activists to 2 years and 3 months imprisonment, a fine of Tk 5,000 and 1 month in default of payment in a case of sabotage at Chawkbazar police station. On January 29, 2015, the police filed a case against 13 local BNP activists in a case of sabotage at Newmarket police station in the capital. In this case, BNP Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohail, BNP Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sarafat Ali, Information Affairs Secretary Azizul Bari Helal and 14 others have been sentenced to six months imprisonment. Apart from that, they were jailed for one year under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
Yesterday, the court sentenced seven people, including the former president of Jubo Dal, Saiful Alam Nirab, to two years in prison in the case of explosives in Tejgaon police station of the capital in May 2015. In a case filed in Shahjahanpur police station in September 2018, the court sentenced 14 people including BNP executive committee member Rafiqul Islam to 2 years and 3 months.
Yesterday, 25 people including Youth Dal President Sultan Salauddin Tuku and Secretary Rajeev Ahsan were sentenced to two years imprisonment in a case of sabotage at Paltan police station on October 28, 2017.
In addition to this, each person will have to serve one more month of imprisonment without paying a fine of 5 thousand rupees. 12 people were acquitted.
Rangpur Office The leaders who were sentenced in Rangpur are District BNP Member Secretary Anichur Rahman Laku, Metropolitan Branch Member Secretary Mahfuz-un-Nabi Don, Metropolitan Jubo Dal Senior Joint Convener Zahir Alam Nayan, District Jubo Dal Vice President Tarek Hasan Sohag and Jubo Dal activist Arif Hossain.
