Bangladesh has written a chapter of disappointment while playing the World Cup with the big dream of playing in the semi-finals. They returned home after the worst season in twenty years. As a consolation, they got the ticket for the ICC Champions Trophy.
India beat the Netherlands by 160 runs in the last match of the first phase at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday. And this confirmed Bangladesh’s participation in the 8-team ODI tournament to be held in Pakistan in 2025.
The Champions Trophy was held in England last year in 2017. Before that they were also the host of the 2013 season. In both the events, the teams in the top eight of the ranking within a certain period got the chance to play.
This rule has been changed in the new tournament which will be held after about eight years. Pakistan is automatically qualified as the host. Apart from them, seven other teams on the points table in the World Cup have got tickets to Pakistan.
After winning all the matches in the first round, the host India will enter the semi-final after being undefeated. They are joined in the top four by South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The fight to reach the finals of these four teams started on Wednesday.
Apart from this, Pakistan and Afghanistan got 8 points from four wins. Pakistan ranks fifth with good net run rate. The current champions of the World Cup finished their journey at number seven with 6 points from three wins.
The following three teams Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Netherlands have won 2 matches each. Bangladesh secured a spot in the Champions Trophy as they finished in the top eight courtesy of a better net run rate. If the Dutch won the last match against India, Bangladesh would have dropped to number nine.
Although Bangladesh secured the Champions Trophy in some way, Afghanistan got the ticket for the first time by playing cricket in Daput. Apart from the expected win against the Netherlands, they lost to England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan.
Having won only two World Cups, Sri Lanka will not be able to play in the Champions Trophy this time. They have played in each of the previous eight seasons. In 2002, they became joint champions at home. This is the first time they will not play in this tournament.
